Sculpture
Neue Wache at Unter den Linden, Berlin
War Memorial Neue Wache
When East and West Berlin were still divided, the Neue Wache or new guardhouse featured the changing of the guards with goose-stepping guards of the People's Army. The guardhouse now contains a sculpture of Käthe Kollwitz, Pieta, depicting a mother cradling her dead son.
Her son joined the German Army at the start of the First World War and was killed in action. Käthe Kollwitz is one of the most important German artists of the twentieth century and was committed to fighting for the rights of the underclass.
The Neue Wache contains the ashes of an unknown soldier and a resistance fighter and also soil from nine concentration camps and balltlefields in Europe.
